ROC 37--September 9, 2011: Results and Analysis

On September 9th 2011, Lou Neglia’s 37th Ring of Combat was held at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City. In his usual fashion Neglia offered fans a night filled with thrilling fights. In addition to the main card, which featured an exhilarating super fight and three championship fights, the explosive undercard did not disappoint fight fans.

The super fight of the night saw a rematch between Chris “The Story” Liguori, who trains at Ricardo Almedia Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and John Salgado, of Fusion MMA. Round one was evenly matched, with both fighters exchanging strikes and scrambling to gain control on the ground. Despite Salgado’s strong take down defense, Liguori was able to take him down in the second round.  Once on top, Ligouri was able to dictate the pace of the remainder of the round. With both fighters exhausted in the final round, they traded punches and kicks in one of the most exciting back and forth fights of the night. Ultimately, it was Liguori, who trains with Frankie Edgar’s Boxing coach Mark Henry, that landed a flush right that knocked out Salgado in the third round.

Ring of Combat XXXVI: Complete Results: June 17, 2011

Friday night’s Ring of Combat event was another well put together card that once again showed off a little bit of everything.  We saw some close decisions, some submissions, and some TKO’s.  Former world champion, Lou Neglia certainly knows how to put a fight card together and that is why Ring of Combat has become a staple on the East Coast as the premier gateway to the UFC.  Upwards of fifty fighters that have had success at the ROC have gone on to sign with the UFC.  Some of them even make their way back “home” after fighting at the UFC.

The main event saw ROC and UFC vet, Pete “Drago” Sell return to the cage after a two year layoff and take a beating in the first round at the hands of Welterweight Champ, Elijah Harshbarger.  Harshbarger used some quick strikes to set up the takedown and took Sell to the mat.  From there it was all Elijah as he unleashed a vicious ground and pound assault that saw Sell’s eye swollen shut.  Harshbarger showed some great improvement with his grappling as well, transitioning from mount to taking Sell’s back and raining down more punches to close out the round.

This was a very pro Sell crowd and they were stunned.  However, none of them had given up hope that Sell could still win this thing.  Apparently Sell never doubted himself either.  Round 2 was much closer early on and this time Sell was the one that took over the fight.  “Drago” used some great striking to create distance and when the fight spilled to the mat, was able to get into side control.  Sell took Harshbarger’s back this time and then came back to side control where he nearly sunk in a guillotine choke.

Ring of Combat XXXV: Complete Results: April 8, 2011

Another Ring of Combat card has come and gone and another Ring of Combat has, once again, outdone the last.  Of the eleven fights on the card, only three went to a decision.  Even those fights were full of action and one of them was also a very close split decision.  All the matchups were very well put together by Lou Neglia, who continues to outdo himself each and every time he and his company put on a show.  My esteemed colleague, “The Garv”, has already posted the complete results so let us relive some of the highlights of the evening.

In the main event of the night, Elijah Harshbarger came all the way from Virginia for this welterweight title fight and his trip paid off.  Harshbarger used several takedowns and some ground and pound to hold worthy opponent, George Sullivan, down for three rounds.  The takedowns were impressive and Harshbarger earned every one of them as Sullivan can more than hold his own out there and taking him down is no easy task.

Ring of Combat XXXIV: Complete Results: Feb 4, 2011

Lou Neglia's held his 34th Ring of Combat show last night at the Tropicana in AC.  As usual, the card was stacked and the fans went away wowed by the action.  Lou has these ROC events down to a science, which is probably why over 50 ROC fighters have gone on to the UFC, including current UFC LW champ Frankie Edgar.

There were plenty of celebrity fighters in attendance last night.  I did the commentary with guests such as Kurt Pellegrino, Pete Sell and Gian Villante, the reigning ROC HW and LHW champ who recently signed with Strikeforce and will be fighting on the televised undercard of the Strikeforce HW GP on February 12.

In one of last night's main card features, Costa Phillipou of the Serra Longo team took on Tiger Schulman fighter Uriah Hall.  This match was a long time coming and had been scheduled and rescheduled several times.  Both men are bombers on the feet and they delivered a closely fought war that earned Costa a majority decision.

All in all, another great night of fights courtesy of Lou Neglia.

When George Sullivan woke up on Friday morning, I bet he never thought in a million years that by the end of the second round of his fight, he would be frustrated and on the brink of defeat.  However, that was the harsh reality as Sullivan prepared for the third round against his toughest opponent yet, Erik Oganov at Ring of Combat 33.  Sullivan, the Pellegrino MMA standout who had won his last three fights, came out for the third round and went to work.

The first round was very even and could have gone either way in the judges eyes. Sullivan appeared to be the busier fighter, but you never know how the judges will score it.  The second round saw Oganov repeatedly take Sullivan down, but never did anything to advance or improve his position.  It was an awful case of lay and pray, but Oganov was scoring some points and Sullivan knew it.  Going back to his corner, Sullivan was visibly frustrated and upset.

Sullivan, knowing full well that he may have been down on the scorecards, never lost his poise or composure.  Sullivan came out for the third round and found himself in a great spot.  George got Oganov to the mat and was in the top position landing body punches and head strikes.  Most importantly, he was scoring points and dominating the round.   The crowd was electric, especially Sullivan’s head cheerleader, who was the most vocal of them all.

Lou Neglia's Ring of Combat was the highlight of the MMA and Sports Extravaganza Saturday night at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.  As always, the show featured great MMA action by fighters who are willing to give their all in the cage.

Kim Couture, ex-wife of MMA legend Randy Couture, made her ROC debut but was beaten by newcome Munah Holland who showed great skills in her stand up game.  Holland is definitely someone in women's MMA to keep an eye on.

The main event feature a war between John Cholish and Rich Moskowitz.  It was a back and forth battle with some great scrambles on the ground, but in the third Cholish submitted Moskowitz with a neat reverse triangle.

I had the pleasure of commentating the show for the Go Fight Live broadcast and was honored to be joined at various times by Chuck Zito, Dan "The Beast" Severn and Jim Miller.

All three guys did a great job on the mic and it was an awesome experience working with them.

We had Shawn Baran and Kevin Wuchter at the show also, and they got some great pics of the Expo and fights.  Check out Kevin's pics here:  Kevin Wuchter.

Wow, what a night of fights!  Chris Weidman, who wrestling ability is already legendary, showed that he can bang with the best of them by knocking down Uriah Hall with a left hook and then finishing him with ground and pound strikes.  Weidman, who remains undefeated at 3-0, looked like a monster in there and you can bet he's going to be added to the list of ROC fighters who have gone on to the UFC.

Lou Neglia's Ring of Combat 30:  Complete Results

By Kevin “The Garv” Garvey

Former world kickboxing champion Lou Neglia put on his 30th Ring of Combat show on June 11, and the event, like always, was a rousing success.   The sellout crowd was thrilled by the action and the fighters left it all in the cage.   In combat sports, that’s as good as it gets.

As a former fighter himself, Lou has a keen insight into the matchmaking process.  He looks at fighters’ styles, records, history of opponents and many other factors in determining who matches with whom.  And that expertise is evident at every Ring of Combat show.   The fights are always competitive and exciting, which is why the ROC is such a popular event, and has thrived where so many other promotions have failed.
