Combat at the Capitale – Knock Outs Galore

Friday September 25th, 2009 – Chinatown, New York City – World Champion Louis Neglia is at it again – with the latest installment of New York City’s Premier Kickboxing/Muay Thai show –Combat at the Capitale.

There are plenty of other shows in the city but none compare with this show – the card was loaded with top notch fighters including some Pro MMA bad asses – not to mention the top notch venue on the Bowery and it is truly an event to witness.

MMA star on the rise “Relentless” Jeff Lentz traded his MMA gloves for Boxing gloves tonight and continues to lay waste to anyone who dares enter a ring or a cage with him.

Sensei “Scorpion” Majad was exterminated by Lentz via TKO at 1:05 of R3. Do not stand and trade blows with Lentz he will take your head off.

Pro MMA fighter Jose Sulsano tried his hand at Kickboxing after a recent loss at the Ring of Combat 26 but fared no better against NYC Muay Thai veteran James “B52” Smith.

Smith dropped a megaton bomb on Sulsano at 1:56 of R1 for the Knock out win. Sulsano needs to re-evaluate his decisions to fight anyone anytime – not good for your career to be finished in every fight.

Jersey Fight Club’s Marcus Taylor delivered the knock out of the night when he knocked out Wayne Brown in the 3rd round of their fight. Taylor is one of those guys who you look at and think “wow this guy is too heavy to be a fighter” due to his round build. But do not judge a book by its cover – Taylor is fast – really fast and agile –kind of like Shaq when he starts dancing – you don’t expect him to be that light on his feet- just ask Wayne Brown.

Neglia Competition Team’s Andrea DeAngelo put on a striking clinic against a very tough Chrissy Yandolli, which led to the unanimous decision victory. DeAngelo’s Teammate James DeSantis was involved is a barnburner of a fight which was so close that it could have been called either way but his opponent Mike Han walked away with the split decision victory – can you say “rematch”?

Ring of Combat 26-Philipou wins the ROC Middle Wt. Title

Friday September 11th, 2009 – Atlantic City, New Jersey – Promoter

Louis Neglia is at it again with the 26th installment of East Coast’s longest running Professional MMA Promotion –The Ring of Combat.

Mr. Neglia put together another loaded card with 14 matches featuring some of the best fighters on the east coast. Matchmaking is the key to exciting and entertaining fights and we had some potentially explosive bouts on this evenings card.

Victor O’Donnell defended his ROC Middleweight Title against feared Serra Longo striker and top contender Constantino Phillipou – It was a sea saw battle in which Philipou edged out the victory and the ROC Middleweight title – O’Donnell received an inadvertent poke to the eye which he was pretty upset about. We may see a rematch in the near future.

East Coast gatekeeper Chris Ligouri also defend his ROC Lightweight title against the ever dangerous Dwayne Shelton – another barnburner in the making. This one did not disappoint as the fight was very technical with Ligouri showing tons of poise in the defense of his title against the game Shelton but Ligouri was too much to handle as he kept his belt and the top spot at 155lb.

Lightweight stud on a four fight win streak John Salgado faced his toughest test to date in the Armory’s Ed Guedes for number one contender status. Guedes’ ground game was too much for Salgado as he controlled every round with his takedowns and ground and pound. How about Guedes V. Lenz for the next shot at Ligouri??

Gian Villante provided the knockout of the night in a countrified match with a highlight reel worthy round house kick to the head of Rob Wince. It was two hits, Gian hitting Wince and Wince hitting the mat with his face.

Top Light Heavyweight/Heavyweight Ricardo Romero took on new comer Rich Lictawa. Not sure why Lictawa deserves a title shot with a 2-0 pro record but Romero is not someone to take lightly. He once again proved why he is the top dog at 205 on the east coast with his quick submission win over the ROC newbie.

It is just a matter of time now before we are all watching MMA at a venue like this, but in the mean time the MMA starved Manhattanites are more then happy to watch the fists fly and the kicks land at the Landmark Capitale.

Highlights of the evening included the one sided drubbing handed out by Giancarlo Vinciguerra against fellow Brooklynite Eddie Fahey. Ed was game but could not match the offensive output that Vinciguerra set. Vinciguerra wins the battle for Brooklyn.

The knock out of the night has to go to Yves Derisier out of Dragon VMA, who put an end to his match with Dean Middlebrook via a roundhouse to th eface that had Middlebrook out cold before he hit the mat at the 40 second mark. of round 1.

The main event lived up to everyone’s expectations and was the fight of the night with exciting action throughout. Justin Greskiewicz wins via unanimous decision.

During Intermission Lou neglia presented Referee Fred Fitzgerald with a Lifetime Achievement Award after he refereed his 2000th bout. Fred has refereed in six countries and is one of the top Muay Thai referees in the world.

Another 16 match fight card provided non-stop action this evening at the Landmark Capitale in Chinatown. Highlights of the nights' action included;

The fantastic battle that pitted two of the best women Kickboxers in New York State as NYS Women's 120lb.Champion Christine Rosa waged war with WKA East Coast Women's 120lb. Champion Andrea DeAngelo. These two warriors left it all in the ring and had the crowd on the edge of their seats through out the battle. The Draw only adds more interest for their future potential rematch.

Jersey Fight Club's Alex Mnatsaknov as he picked apart Sityodong's Jake Steinman in under 2 minutes.

Atlantic City, NJ—Even though the event was missing one of its biggest fights, Lou Neglia’s Ring of Combat XX still brought plenty of excitement to the Jersey Shore. The event was highlighted by another impressive performance from Tom Gallicchio as he successfully defended his USKBA Welterweight Title against Doug Gordon with a rear naked choke in the first round. In what appeared to be a mismatch in the other title bout, the undefeated Nick Catone almost had a scare when the grizzly veteran, Eric Tavares slapped on an armbar from the bottom in their USKBA Middleweight title bout. Catone was resilient, avoided the submission and TKO’d Tavares near the end of the first round. Here are the official results and play-by-play from Friday night’s action:

USKBA Middleweight Title Championship: Nick Catone (BJJ Shore Academy/Ricardo Almeida) vs. Eric Tavares (Shotokan BJJ) Round 1: A feeling process out ensues and Catone is unable to take Tavares down after two feeble attempts. Catone eats a left kick to the face and catches it and takes Tavares down. Tavares defends well from the ground-and-pound and secures and armbar. Catone slams him a few times but Tavares holds onto the armbar. Tavares eventually gives it up and eats some leather in from ground-and pound. Catone is able to get the crucifix position on top and traps both of Tavares’ arms. In this position, Catone lands heavy blows and the referee is forced to stop the bout. Catone def. Tavares by TKO – 4:25 rd. 1

USKBA Welterweight Title Championship: Tom Gallicchio (Rhino Fight Team) vs. Doug Gordon (Team Rush Elite BJJ) Round 1: After trading some strikes, Gordon gets the takedown but welcomes a stand up. They trade strikes again and Gordon appears to getting the better of Gallicchio. After another clinch, Gallicchio gets the takedown and lands in the mount position. From here, Gallicchio is able to land heavy punches but Gordon gets out of danger. Gallicchio almost gets side control but then winds up taking Gordon’s back and sinking the hooks. Gallicchio secures the rear-naked-choke and forces the challenger to tap for another impressive performance. Gallicchio def. Gordon by rear naked choke – 3:11 rd. 1

Costa Phillippou (Team Serra Longo) vs. Tony Andreocci (NJ Combat Club) Round 1: Phillippou wastes no time and stuns Andreocci early with strikes. Seemingly out on his feet, Andreocci tastes more leather and is dropped, Referee Kevin Mulhall halts the bout just 22 seconds into the first round. Phillippou def. Andreocci by KO – 0:22 rd. 1

Fernando Rivera (Team Ewick) vs. Brett Kohan (Rhino Fight Team) Round 1: These big boys come out swinging and after tasting each other’s leather, Kohan goes for a takedown and ends up in a clinch. They separate and both appear to be comfortable on the feet. Kohan lands a thunderous right hand and drops Rivera on his back. Kohan follows it up with some vicious ground-and-pound knocking Rivera and his mouthpiece completely out. Doctors attend to Rivera and he is finally helped to his feet after a scary knockout.

Scott Harrington (Alex Wilkie) vs. Ed Fyvie (Ricardo Almeida/Spa City BJJ) Round 1: After trading a few insignificant strikes, Fyvie clinches with Harrington and forces him against the cage. Fyvie breaks apart with a punch and Harrington answers with a kick to the body. They clinch again with Harrington’s back on the fence. They separate and Fyvie lands more strikes. They clinch again but the referee separates them. Harrington looks uncomfortable in the stand up game and Fyvie lands a huge right followed by a knee. Fyvie then pounces on Harrington and the fight is stopped by the referee. Harrington stands up and has a nice size cut on the bridge of his nose. Fyvie def. Harrington by TKO (ref. stoppage to a cut) – 3:55 rd. 1

Ryan LaFlare (Bellmore Kickboxing) vs. Radji Bryson Barrett (TSMMA) Round 1: The fighters circle each other until LaFlare clinches and gets the takedown on Barrett. They eventually land in Barrett’s guard and LaFlare brings him to the cage. Barrett tries for an armbar but is up against the cage and LaFlare pulls out. LaFlare gets back in side control but Barrett brings it back to the feet and gets the takedown but lands in a triangle. LaFlare switches to an armbar and after trying to punch his way out, Barrett eventually taps out. LaFlare def. Barrett by armbar – 2: 38 rd. 1

Brian Demuro (Bomb Squad) vs. Nabih (Team Serra Longo) Round 1: Nabih tries for a “Superman” punch but Demuro avoids the strike and forces Nabih against the cage. Demuro jumps guard but Nabih eventually forces the stand up after they both nullify each other on the ground. The fighters clinch again and Nabih lands a right hand and almost get Demuro’s back while standing. They clinch again and Nabih tries for a guillotine choke against the cage as the round ends. Round 2: Nabih tries to trade strikes and Demuro forces a clinch. Nabih keeps the heat standing and lands a right hand and subsequently takes Demuro down. In guard, Demuro attempts a gogo plata but it is quickly thwarted and the fighters get back to their feet. Another clinch ensues and the referee separates them. Nabih starts with some flashy kicks and punches as Demuro seems uncomfortable in the stand up game. It appears that during this exchange, Demuro lost his mouthpiece. During the break between second and third round, Demuro doesn’t answer the bell to an apparent knee injury. Nabih def. Demuro by TKO – 4:00 rd. 2

Dwayne Shelton (Team Prodigy) vs. James Meals (AMA Fight/Renzo) Gracie Round 1: Shelton throws a right, misses and then clinches. He almost gets a takedown but Meals is able to land on his knee and get back to his feet. Shelton tries a throw but inadvertently lands with Meals on top. In Shelton’s guard, Meals is reversed to the bottom. Meals attempts an armbar from the bottom and Shelton backs away and welcomes the stand up. A right hook stuns Meals but he is able to recover quickly and get a takedown. This time Meals is more active but Shelton is able to avoid any significant damage. The round ends in Shelton’s guard.

Round 2: This time the fighters exchange strikes and when Shelton throws a kick, Meals grabs it and takes him down. Shelton gets back to his feet but gets taken down again. Shelton is able to get on top but Meals attempts another armbar. Shelton avoids the submission and lands some heavy ground-and-pound and then forces Meals to stand up. Meals gets another takedown but Shelton is able to gain the top position again. From here, Shelton lands some ground-and-pound and lets Meals stand up. Shelton lands another huge right that puts Meals back on the ground but he quickly recovers. Shelton lets the fight stand back up and swings again for the fences. He misses and Meals gets the takedown and lands on top with only ten seconds left in the round. Round 3: Shelton continues the striking from round two but Meals is able to avoid any damage and gets the takedown. Shelton tries for a guillotine from the bottom but is unsuccessful. Shelton is able to tie up Meals from the bottom forcing a referee stand-up. Shelton finds another home for his right hand but Meals responds with a left hand. Meals grabs for a single leg but Shelton punishes him with shots to the body and head. Meals tries for another takedown but is unsuccessful. He gets the takedown on the second attempt but there are only 10 seconds left in the third and final round. Shelton def. Meals by unanimous decision after three rounds (30-27 all) Dom Stanco (Bellmore Kickboxing) vs. John Salgado (Team Ross Zocchi) Round 1: These two come out swinging and Stanco initially stuns Salgado with a left hand and then finishes with an uppercut forcing his opponent to his knees with his mouthpiece flying. The referee halts the bout as Salgado gets up and protests. It appears as though Salgado was momentarily out and was going to receive more punishment if the referee did not intervene. Stanco def. Salgado by KO – 0:14 rd. 1

Troy Maxwell (ACMMA) vs. Rich Ashkar (Team Oliveria) Round 1: Ashkar goes right for the takedown and gets it. Ashkar then transition smoothly and sinks the hooks in. From the Ashkar works for the rear-naked choke and although Maxwell tried to defend, he eventually tapped out. Ashkar def. Maxwell by rear naked choke – 1:05 rd. 1

Joey Camacho (AMA Fight/Renzo Gracie) vs. Vasilica Goian (TSMMA) Round 1: The fighters clinch and Goian forces Camacho to the cage. Against the cage, Camacho goes for guillotine but is unable to fully secure it. The referee separates them and Goian sprawls and avoids a takedown attempt. Camacho is still relentless and grabs for a single leg forcing Goian to the mat. After Camacho is unable to improve his position in the guard, the referee stands them up. Camacho attempts another takedown but the round ends.

Round 2: They clinch quickly again and this time Goian gets the takedown. Camacho gets to his knees but Goian is delivering some heavy body shots. Camacho then reverses and lands on top in Goian’s guard. A stall in the action forces another stand-up. Camacho attempts another single leg but Goian defends well. They both stand up and after a brief exchange of strikes, Camacho gets the takedown with 45 seconds left in the round. However, Camacho is unable to land any serious damage on top and the round ends.

Round 3: Both fighters appear to be tired but Camacho comes out and gets another takedown. Goian defends well in his guard an attempts a guillotine choke from the bottom. Although Camacho gets out, he is unable to land any ground and pound or improve position. The referee forces another stand-up. Camacho goes right in for the takedown but Goian sprawls and attempts a guillotine. Goian attempts to take the back but Camacho escapes and the fighters end up in Camacho’s guard. The third round ends with both fighters extremely exhausted. Goian def. Camacho by split dec. after three rounds (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Jay Silva (Team Rampage Jackson) vs. Mark DaPolito (Pitt’s Penn)

Round 1: After Silva tried a flying knee, DaPolito grabbed him in mid air and slammed him to the mat. From there, DaPolito was unable to do any significant damage from Silva’s guard. When DaPolito attempted to gain side control, he was reversed and Silva landed on top and gained full mount. DaPolito turned to give his back and Silva sunk the hooks in. However, he wasn’t able to secure the rear naked choke and DaPolito was able to get the fight back to the feet. After a clinch, DaPolito was able to take Silva down and the round ended with DaPolito on top.

Round 2: A left-right combination stunned DaPolito but he was able to clinch quickly. Silva was then able to secure a takedown and gained DaPolito’s back. Same result as round one as DaPolito was able to escape and get on top. Silva defended well in the guard and doesn’t receive any damage. Silva eventually escapes and gets on top and passes to side control. DaPolito gives his back up again and this time, there was no escape from the rear-naked-choke. Silva def. DaPolito by rear naked choke 3:47 rd. 2

Friday May 9th, 2008 :: World Champion Louis Neglia knows what it takes to put on a good show – action, action & more action. ROC 19 served it up by the fistful!

The Ring of Combat is officially the "Big show" on the east coast now with the HDnet broadcasting deal and every hungry local fighter looking for national recognition. Mr. Neglia brought in a new wave of hungry local talent to fight some the local established studs and it was a recipe for a hot plate of beatdowns.

The first match of the evening pitted BJJ stud Ed Fyvie in his return to action against Atlantic City MMA fighter Anthony Morrison. Morrison was aggressive in his ground and pound as Fyvie attempted to submit him from the bottom. Morrison was winning the striking game but eventually fell in to a triangle choke that forced the tapout at 3:47 of R1. A triumphant return for the Ed Fyvie.

The second match had two Jersey Shore tough guys facing off with Bill Scott representing BJJ Shore Academy/Ricardo Almedia against Atlantic City MMA fighter Joe Diamond. This was a very technical grappling match that could have been a NAGA championship by its intense grappling. Bill Scott appeared to have a slight advantage via take down and submission attempts after R1. We start R2 the same way R1 went with an immediate clinch and a cooperative take down by Scott. Diamond was nullified by Scott's high Guard and then sunk in an armbar from the bottom to force the tapout at 1:54 of R2.

"Crazy" Chris Schlesinger looked to get back in to the win column after a year plus of down time. He rededicated himself with team Soca BJJ & Bellmore kickboxing and stepped up to face Izuma Te Ryu fighter Anthony Vetro. Vetro nails Schlesinger with three hard left hooks that do not faze Schlesinger who then clinches with Vetro. Schlesinger managed to get Vetros' back late in R1 but Vetro somehow powered out of the full mount and was able to escape and defend a late armbar attempt by Schlesinger. R2 begins with Sclesinger taking Vetro down and immediately securing his back he finished the match via Rear naked choke at :47 of R2.

Reality Fighting veteran Dom Stanco has jumped ship and is now in the treacherous ROC waters. Waiting on the Jersey Shore for his arrival is Mark Berracol out of the BJJ Shore Academy/Ricardo Almedia. Stanco and Berracol put on a very technical grappling battle and had Berracol in trouble numerous times but to Berracols' credit he managed to escape until he was finally finished by Stanco at 3:57 of R2 due to unanswered strikes.

The Eighth match of the evening featured fast rising Doug Gordon out of the Elite BJJ/Team Rush camp who faced new comer Levon Maynard representing Global Martial Arts Academy. Gordon quickly charged in and secured the takedown where he delivered strikes until the Ref stood them up. Maynard seemed to be getting comfortable delivering kicks to Gordons legs until Gordon decided he had had enough and charged in with his heavy hands to finish the bout with a huge uppercut at 2:15 R1 for the TKO Finish. Keep your eyes on Gordon he is a star on the rise.

Undefeated Light heavyweight rising stud Ricardo Romero faced Constantinos Phillippou representing Team Serra/Longo. It is obvious that Mr. Phillippou is looking to make a name for him self in a hurry by facing Mr. Romero this early in his MMA career – baptizism by Fire. Costas looked sharp in the striking exchange and defended Romeros takes downs well after being slammed hard by Romero early on. Coach Ray Longo did his homework and prepared their fighter well as he won the first round with his sharp striking and take down defense. Round two begins with a quick exchange then Costas nails Romero with a hard right hand that rocks Romero but his wrestling instinct led him to secure a takedown and side control where Romero did nothing but smother Costas until he recovered. Romero then secures north south position and begins nailing Costas with strikes. Costas turns and Romero attempts an armbar, then a Guillotine; then are restarted to end a very methodical R2 slight edge to Romero for his control. R3 starts and both men look exhausted who has more in the gas tank??

Romero again secures the takedown and side mount on Costas and continues to deliver G & P. They stand up and again Romero secures the takedown and continues the Ground and pound assault until the bell rings. I score R3 for Romero and the referees agree but Costas should be proud of his performance as he faced a very tough opponent and belonged in the ring with him despite the split decision loss.

The main event of the evening featured Nick Catone also representing BJJ Shore Academy/Almedia facing Mitch Whitesel from the Wreck Room for the USKBA Middleweight title. Catone and Whitesel exchanged strikes and then engaged in a cliching battle until Catone turned up the heat and laid in to Whitesel with a barrage of blows that forced the ref stoppage at 2:27 R1 to secure the USKBA Middleweight title!!

Atlantic City, New Jersey - Promoter Louis Neglia continues to set the standard for MMA here on the east coast. Having inked a deal with Mark Cuban's HDNet Fights for national broadcasting a few months ago, Mr. Neglia put together one of the best fight cards in recent memory for the latest installment of the Ring of Combat.

No "spectacle" fights here just the cream of the crop of the local talent pool – Team Ricardo Almeida, Team Renzo Gracie, Rhino Fight Team, Team Serra Longo were all represented tonight . The card included the finals of the "Beasts of the Northeast" tournament. This alone was enough to sell out the Tropicana but like a late night infomercial….wait there was more!

Two Super Fights with Chris Ligouri taking on Jim Miller for local top dog bragging rights and Gregor Gracie facing New York Bombsquad's Eric Henry.

The first preliminary was a fast paced struggle which set the tone for the evening as new comer Tim Troxell dominated Tiger Schulman fighter Vasilica Goian. Troxell sunk in a tight choke early in the first round but the TSMMA fighter showed heart in battling his way out but was eventually out hustled by the relentless Troxell.

The second preliminary bout of the evening pitted Long Island fighter Nabih against Joshua Keys; Nabih had a strong cheering section. The crowd broke out into "Nabih" chants as the Serra Longo rep made his way to the ring. Unfortunately Nabih was at the wrong end of a left hook from Joshua Keys that simply caught the Serra Longo Fighter flush. A real surprise since Nabih had been controlling the action up until the KO finish.

Nick Catone made quick work of his opponent Ben Knight after a quick scramble and take down it only took Catone 1:08 in to the first round finish off Knight via Ground and pound elbows. Catone opened up a nasty gash on Knights forehead which forced the ref stoppage. 

Local stand out Marc Stevens faced off with Rhino Fight Team bruiser Alexis Aquino. Stevens clinched and laid several knees to Aquinos face which caused a faucet of a bloody nose in round one. Stevens was a step quicker to the punch and the blood was a clear indication of his dominance in the round. Aquino seemed to gather himself late in round one and finished the round with top back control landing some hammer fists. Aquino stepped it up in round two stuffing Stevens' takedown attempts and securing a dominant top position, when it went back to the stand up Aquino clearly had the striking advantage. He may have been the one bleeding but it was Stevens who suffered the beating in the end. Aquino reigned down blows on his "Turtled" opponent and forced the TKO referee stoppage via unanswered strikes, another win for the Rhino Brusier.

In another barnburner Tiger Schulman workhorse Rich "The Puerto Rican Pit-bull" Bione went to war with Team Rush grappler Doug Gordon. Bione is not afraid to test himself and Gordon presented the current obstacle. Gordon quickly secured half mount on Bione and began delivering hammer fists from the half mount, the two scrambled for position with Gordon again securing the mount from the back this time. Gordon flattened out Bione with both hooks and secured the Rear naked choke for the submission victory at 2:40 R1. A dominant performance by the Team Rush fighter Doug Gordon, exposing his vulnerable ground game.

Local BJJ stud Dan Miller faced off against John Howard in the 4^th match of the main card. Miller quickly secured the takedown and half mount to reign down strikes on Howard. Howard stuffed Miler's second take down attempt and turned the tide for the second half of round 1. A real chess match with surprising BJJ skills from Howard as he battled Miller to a stand still in Round 2. Miller finally secured the takedown after a hard clinching scramble and began to deliver “GNP” from the guard for most of Round three. After 3 rounds the bout was awarded to Dan Miller via unanimous decision.

IFL veteran Dante Rivera who has been on a tear as of late was set to face Fernando Rivera until Fernando broke his foot while warming up. Scratch match number 5 due to foot injury.

The tournament finals were also well matched but one match really stood out by pitting two of the most active and well regarded fighters in these parts against one another – Team Ironhorse MMA warrior Mike Massenzio v. Boneyard MMA fighter Lance Everson. These two guys have been climbing the local fight ladder for years it was only a matter of time before their paths intersected. The two middleweights clinched and kneed each other for the first minute with Massenzio securing the head and arm clinch to control the position but Everson freed himself and once again secured the underhooks for his clinching striking game. Massenzio caught Everson with a sharp right hand that set up a take down then secured the Guillotine choke in the guard for the submission win at 4:04 of the first round. Massenzio secures the middleweight tournament championship!

The main event "Superfights" pitted two of the east coast best lightweights against one another with the hope of the winner reaching the UFC. Both of the Miller brothers are feared opponents these days, Jim Miller came in to the match with an 8-1 record, the one loss coming at the hands of Ligouri's Rhino teammate & training partner Frankie Edgar.

Ligouri's record is a bit deceiving at 7-5 one might assume that Miller was going to waltz through him. A closer look reveals a 5-1 mark in his last 6 fights but it has been over a year since Ligouri annihilated Dorian Price in under 2 minutes. Would there be Ring Rust in his game? Would Miller submit Ligouri as he has in all of his recent victories?

Ligouri came out looking svelt at 155lbs, two of the top dogs in these parts did not disappoint. Miller secured the takedown quickly and sunk in a tight armbar that almost finished the fight but Ligouri scrambled free. Miller pressed the action and had Ligouri defending half mount strikes, a kimura attempt, a side arm attempt. Miller wanted no part of Ligouri’s stand up and quickly took the Rhino fighter down and continued the aggressive ground attack. The second round began with another take down by Miller, Ligouri did a better job of defending the submission attempts from Miller's guard and landed repeated blows from the guard for most of round two. At some point Miller opened up a nasty cut over Ligouri's right eye but his ground and pound was relentless.

I score this match even after two rounds as Miller won the first round and Ligouri secured the second round. But the doctor would not allow the fight to continue for the deciding third round due to the cut. Miller was declared the winner via TKO Referee stoppage due to a cut.

The other Main Event pitted Gregor Gracie – the next generation of the Gracie dynasty against the hard hitting Bombsquad trooper Erik Henry. Gracie just earned his first MMA win this past June with a submission win over Josh Lydell. Henry had been on a bit of a winning streak until he lost a majority decision to Doug Gordon at ROC 16. Gracie showed a confidence that only comes with the Gracie family legacy. He quickly took Henry down and passed to side control where he methodically maneuvered himself in to an arm bar position but Henry stood up and tried to keep the fight standing where he was more dominant. Gracie again clinched and traded punches with Henry in order to set up the take down. An accidental low blow by Henry gave Gracie a breather from the clinching strikes of Henry. Gracie ended the round with another takedown, score round one for Gracie.

Round two began with a good striking exchange from both fighters but Gracie quickly secured another takedown and sunk in a keylock from side control and forced the submission victory as Henry tapped out at 1:56 of R2.

(October 26th, Tropicana Casino & Resort, Atlantic City) Sometimes you can predict them, sometimes you can’t. At Lou Neglia’s Ring of Combat 16: “Beasts of the Northeast” tournament semi-finals, the warriors who survived September’s opening round clashed to decide who goes on to the finals. Who came out on top? Well, if you thought the last middleweight tournament winner was going to make it, you were wrong. And if you thought the wrestler with just one pro fight under his belt was going to crumble against the far more experienced veteran, again, you were wrong. It was a night that had knockouts, submissions and wars – and while some of the outcomes were predictable, there were definitely a few upsets. Highlights of the event included:

• Rising star Mike Massenzio and his growing repertoire of submissions. This time it was a north-south choke, and opponent Erik Charles had no choice but to tap at 1:18 of the first.

Friday Night October 12^th, 2007 - Louis Neglia's Combat at the Capitale continues the streak of sell out events with another massive 18 bout fight card.

New York City is starving for real combat sports and Mr. Neglia has been cooking up his special brand of pugilism to satisfy the New York audiences for years. Like a vintage wine the shows are getting better and better with time, don’t take my word for it come and check out the spectacle for yourself (if you can get tickets they sell out quickly!).

This is one of the best MMA shows on the East Coast and many of the local fighters sharpen their striking skills at the Capitale in Chinatown. It was a who's who of local talent representing some of the best gyms in the area; Longo Competition Team, TSMMA, Bellmore Kickboxing, Wat Gym, Neglia Competition team to name a few.

If MMA ever gets sanctioned here in New York Mr. Neglia will be ready to feed the hungry masses by the fistful.

Highlights of the evening

• The Devastating KO of Zadie Morris at the hands of James "B-52" Smith it took little over a minute for Smith to connect and leave Morris looking at the pretty lights!!!
• The one sided drubbing Brent Appiarius delivered to a game Jonathan Kudman. Kudman showed tons of heart but could not keep up with the more experienced Appiarius and his relentless pace.
• TSMMA's Melissa Bopp who "Bopped" Eternal M.A. fighter Danielle Farula and forced the TKO ref stoppage with her non-stop assault.
• Andrea DeAngelo’s assault of Nikki Domer which forced the Ref stoppage over a tough Nikki Domer.
• Devon Cormack’s schooling of Matt Lyall, Cormack just tooled Lyall with his laid back demeanor. Nothing makes up for experience.

Friday June 29^th, 2007 – Chinatown, NYC- World Champion Louis Neglia presents the latest installment of New York City’s Premier Kickboxing Series – Combat at the Capitale.

As is the norm for this venue it was again a sell out crowd in attendance to watch the fists fly & the kicks connect. The main event featured local TSMMA fighter Rich "The Puerto Rican Pit-bull" Bione, as he looked to continue his winning streak against Pakistan Eagle fighter Yaser Sauket. Yaser landed a low blow early in the match which fired up the TSMMA fighter and led to the first round TKO for Boine who hasn't lost a fight in several months.

Bellmore Kickboxing student Seth Tiringer provided the highlight of the night with his vicious Roundhouse KO of Scott Conlon. If you blinked you might of missed the lightning quick kick to the head.

The co-main event rematch between Uriah Hall & James "B-52" Smith was strong enough for the loyal Capitale crowd to be the sole main event as these two waged war in their first match up with Smith winning the decision. This time the table was turned as Hall dictated the pace of the match and pulled out the unanimous decision victory over Smith. I assume that a rubber match is now in order since each fighter now holds a victory over the other.

Neglia Competition Team student Brent Appiarus made quick work of Dragon Martial Arts fighter Ed Fahey. Appiarus simply out punched his opponent to the point that the referee would not allow the match to continue after the first round.

Ring of Combat 14 – Tournament of Champions Finals -Three New Champions Crowned

 April 27, 2007, Atlantic City-New Jersey-World Champion Promoter Louis Neglia's Ring of Combat Tournament Finals provided another night of excitement for the thousands of fans in attendance at the sold out Tropicana Resort and Casino. The Ring of Combat series has provided some of the best MMA on the east coast and tonight was no exception.

24 Fighters from all over the country made their way to the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City to compete in the tournament but there can be only one winner in each weight class and tonight we got down to the nitty-gritty. The 6 finalists did not hold anything back, we had knock-outs, we had submissions and at the end of the night the three winners of the tournament went home with championship belts & their pockets a lot heavier with their share of the $100,000.00 dollar purse.

Team Quests Ian "The Barn Owl" Loveland emerged from one end of the bracket to face Marylands  Renzo Gracie/Team Ground Control fighter James "Binky" Jones. 

On Paper is seemed that Loveland would have his way with Jones due to his experience and quality of opponents, But Jones was not to be denied this evening. The Jiu-Jistu Fighter got the fight to the ground and endured some of Loveland's ground and pound while stringing together submission attempts and eventually locked up Loveland's arms in a deep arm-bar for the submission victory.

Texas native Todd "The maniac" Moore has run through his opponents and was set to face undefeated New York native Phillipe Nover representing Team Insight. Unfortunately Mr. Nover suffered a shoulder injury while training and could not face Moore in the finals, so his semi-finals opponent Jay "Deisel" Coleman gets the spot in the Finals. This was an interesting match up on paper as both fighters are at the upper echelon of the weight class, Moore did not give the Rhino fighter a chance to display his abilities as he shot in on Coleman and forced the referee stoppage via unanswered strikes from the guard to secure the Ring of Combat Welterweight Championship in 52 seconds of the first round.

Middleweight Division

Marc Stevens has been on a bit of a tear of late winning his last 3 fights; his opponent Jason House showed tons of heart in the semi-finals match against Rhino Fighter & Marco Ruas Black belt Erick Tavares. Tavares was beating the hell out of House until his corner changed their game plan in the second round and chopped Tavares down with Thai kicks for the TKO ref stoppage and advancement. So we know there is no quit in House, this match up was very intriguing as these two guys almost mirror each other in their aggressiveness. This was the most exciting fight of the night as both men traded punches, kicks and takedowns for the full three round. Stevens was the aggressor and controlled the pace of the match and it resulted in a unanimous decision victory for Marc Stevens.

Another great night of MMA action from Promoter Louis Neglia

Two things that can be said for most casinos… 1) there are no clocks on the wall and no concept of time, 2) there are no windows to see the weather. For USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter World Champion Louis Neglia, his "RING OF COMBAT XIII – Tournament of Champions" was a welcome escape from the elements. Held on March 16, 2007 at The Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the 'combat' began trying to get down to the venue. The morning of the event, the Northeast was hit with a Spring welcoming snowstorm. Although Atlantic City saw mostly rain and wind, the towns north saw snow, hail, rain and numerous accidents on the highways heading down to Atlantic City. Was the drive to Atlantic City for the "RING OF COMBAT XIII – Tournament of Champions" Professional MMA event worth it? You bet it was.

While it was obvious that some people were not able to attend, the fighters were there and ready to get into the ring. The hearty and enthusiastic fans that made it to "RING OF COMBAT XIII – Tournament of Champions", were treated to Preliminary Bouts and the Semi-Finals for the "TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS" to be held on April 27, 2007 at The Tropicana Casino and Resorts in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Friday November 17^th, 2006 – Atlantic City, New Jersey- Promoter Louis Neglia's 12^th installment of the highly successful Ring of Combat series is a bit of a throwback to the early days of MMA when the elimination tournament was the hot ticket in town.

The Ring of Combat assembled an impressive group of up and comers who are looking to claim their spots among the best of the best. With three weight classes and 4 fights per division in the first round of action it promised to be one hell of a show. The great crowd at the Tropicana was not disappointed tonight as the young studs let their fists & submissions do the talking. Winners will advance to the 2^nd round (March 16th 2007) to determine the finalists for the third and final round (April 27, 2007) and be crowned tournament Champions in each weight division a la Pride Grand Prix style.

We had some of the best teams in the country competing for tonight for advancement to the championship round. Team Quest, Team Serra Longo, Rhino Fight Team, and Team TSK to name a few. This was an action packed card that kept the crowd cheering through out the evening.

The Brawl of the night had to go to Landon "The Show" Showalter & Don "The Hammer" Wagner. Showalter was the sharper more experienced fighter but Wagner should change his nickname to "Heart" because he showed tons of it while taking the worst of the striking exchange. Wagner would not take a step back he kept coming and almost stole the second round with a flurry of hooks and uppercuts. But it was too little too late as the judges ruled the unanimous decision for the "Show".

The match between TSK fighter Rich Bione & Rhino's Kevin Roddy kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Bione was the superior striker as he nailed Roddy at will while the fight remained standing. The ground though was Roddy?s turf as he nearly submitted Bione with an arm bar late in the first round and dominated Bione on the ground in the second round as well. The bout was ruled a draw and another round was ordered up; Bione wanted no part of Roddy's ground game and landed a hard right hand that knock Roddy down and resulted in the TKO referee stoppage at :30 seconds of R3 for the TSK fighter.

The submission of the night has to go to Team Serra Longo soldier Joey Scarola with the slick arm bar finish of Will Kerr after escaping a tight guillotine choke in the first minute of action. Scarola is a guy to watch out for, as he is solid all around but lethal on the ground.

The Knock out of the night goes to the Rhino Fight Team's Jay "Diesel" Coleman as he silenced the entire arena with the devastating knock out of Team TSK's Dominic Dellagatta. There was no love loss between these two camps as these two fight teams have been warring since the late 1990?s for Tri-State bragging rights. Like the Hatfields and McCoys; Team TSK & Team Rhino share common ground and there seems to be some border issues that need to be resolved. I am sure this is not the last time these two teams will face each other.

Keep your eyes on Team Renzo rep Colin O'Rourke as he dominated Yon Guenechea  & begins his rise in the ranks.

Team Quest fighter Mike Dolce & Wreck Room's Mitch Whitesel had a very competitive match that resulted in a unanimous decision victory for Dolce.

1st Match, TSK's Sophia Gegovic and Team Longo representative Christine Rosa stepped in to the ring for the WKA women's featherweight title match. Gegovic and Rosa waged a war from the first bell, both fighters traded blows relentlessly.

An unbelievable pace that showed how much dedication to conditioning is required to compete at this level. The match was very close but Rosa was able to press the action against Gegovic to edge out the split decision victory over the very tough TSK fighter and secure the WKA Womens' Featherweight title.

TSK's Uriah Hall faced off against Weapon Swat team's Jim "B52" Smith in a heavy weight Muay Thai match. These two big men went toe to toe for the entire match with Jim Smith securing the unanimous decision victory. A very good match up.

Andy & Hardip Singh put on quite a battle for the WKA N.E. 120lb. Muay Thai championship. The two lightweight fighters put on one of the most entertaining matches of the evening with their high paced kickboxing clinic. Andy Singh was the "sharper" of the two and out worked Hardip to capture the Championship via a unanimous decision after five hard fought rounds.

The main event of the evening pitted Steven Richards from the Extreme LaCosta team against another TSK bruiser in Will Hamilton. Hamilton rocked Richards late in the first round, which forced the doctor to check on Richards. The Doctor stopped the match in between rounds to the disappointment of the Extreme corner and the crowd who were very much in to this match as the two fighters battled intensely for the first round.

A rematch is the best way to appease the unhappy Extreme team and I am sure that Will Hamilton would like nothing else but to let his blows finish the fight. Hamilton's win made it a winning night for the TSK contingent who finished the evening with a 5-4 record against some very stiff competition.

Louis Neglia has done it again. Combat at the Capitale was a huge success. Great fight of Muay Thai & Kickboxing keeping a sellout crowd at the edge of their seats throughout the night.

Men's Kickboxing 140lb Limit -Mike Rifken (Garguilo kickboxing) vs Vinny Chapple (NY Sanda Team) Winner: Mike Rifkin via Unanimous decision after 2 three minute rounds.

Men's Kickboxing 155lb Limit -Julio Cesar Flores (Neglia Competition Team) vs John Tesoriero (Team Sucgang) Winner: Julio Cesar Flores via unanimous decision, this was a see-saw battle in which Flores out-punched his opponent.

Woman's Muay Thai 131lb Limit- Munah Holland (Team Tiger Schulman) vs Kristine (Extreme Team) Winner: Kristine via split decision.

Men's Muay Thai 175lb Limit -Artie Moyano (Team Tiger Schulman) vs Andrew Rivera (Kru Phil Nurse, Wat Gym) Winner: Andrew Rivera via split decision after 3 hard fought rounds.

International Challenge Women's Bout130lb Limit – Kat Diaz (Team Tiger Schulman) vs Hilary Mack (Scotland, Caledonian Muay Thai) Winner: Kat Diaz via TKO at 1:24 or the third round. Mack showed heart but was overwhelmed by Diaz in the third.

Men's Kickboxing Main Event 167lb Limit -James Onnikain (Longo Competition Team) vs Marlon Sims (California, FMS-TVT) Winner: James Onnikain via unanimous decision after a 4 round war, good finale.

The first "JUNIOR FIGHTERS" event was held in October 2004. On May 21, 2005, USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter World Champion Louis Neglia (see photo at left) held his second "JUNIOR FIGHTERS" event. This time, the amateur Junior bouts in Thaiboxing and Full Contact Kickboxing, were held at the spacious New Brunswick Boxing Gym in New Brunswick, New Jersey. By the success of the first two "JUNIOR FIGHTERS" events, there should be many more to come. In fact Promoter Louis Neglia says "I want to do four of these events each year" (in addition to his "RING OF COMBAT" and "COMBAT AT THE CAPITALE" events). How does one measure 'success' when all the competitors are under the age of 18? The answer is simple. By the look on the fighters' faces before and after the event. Although some go home disappointed, their training studios put the emphasis on gaining 'ring experience'. Win, lose or draw, the experience that is gained by competing on one of these events can never be simply taught in the classroom. All competitors come away winners. These "JUNIOR FIGHTERS" are not sitting on the sidelines…they are in the ring gaining valuable experience. These "JUNIOR FIGHTERS" are the future of the sport.

The time and number of rounds of the bouts vary by the age of the competitors. For the youngest competitors, a typical bout can be 2 one minute rounds not scored. It can then go up to 2 one and a half minute rounds graduating to 3 two minute rounds that are scored. It any event, the action is second to none. Competitors on "JUNIOR FIGHTERS" events give their all and the audience members are most enthusiastic.

d'AUGUSTE AND GABERT RETAIN TITLES ON "RING OF COMBAT 8"

To all the fans that braved the cold and windy atmosphere of the old summer resort area of Asbury Park on New Jersey's shore, the end justified the means. On March 19, 2005, they came to the Asbury Park Convention Hall to see a top notch MMA event and they left content. The Main Event of USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter World Champion Louis Neglia's (Louis Neglia Martial Arts) "RING OF COMBAT 8" featured LAURA d'AUGUSTE defending her Ring of Combat/USKBA MMA Welterweight Championship Title. The Featured Bout, saw JAMES GABERT defending his Ring of Combat/USKBA MMA Cruiserweight Championship Title. The undercard featured quality MMA bouts with displays of technique and power.

In the Main Event, scheduled for three 5 minute rounds, Ring of Combat/USKBA MMA Welterweight Champion LAURA d'AUGUSTE went against ROXANNE MODAFFERI. Modafferi was coming off an impressive win. d'Auguste was coming off a successful title defense. On paper, Modafferi seemed to be d'Auguste's toughest opponent to date. This provided to be true as this bout went the distance. At the end of three 5 minute rounds, the unanimous decision went to Laura d'Auguste, who retains her Ring of Combat/USKBA MMA Welterweight Championship Title.

In the Featured Bout, scheduled for three 5 minute rounds, Ring of Combat/USKBA MMA Cruiserweight Champion JAMES GABERT squared off against DAVID PORTER. It had been some time since Gabert's last title defense. Gabert is one of the toughest fighters in his weight division. Porter, with an undefeated amateur record, came into the fight confident that he could hang with Gabert and possibly take the title from him. Gabert proved to be too much for Porter. This bout was over at 3:25 of Round 1 as Gabert applied armbar and kept the pressure on forcing Porter to tapout. Gabert retains his Ring of Combat/USKBA MMA Cruiserweight Championship Title.

USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter World Champion Louis Neglia had his hands full with this event. A last minute venue change added to the suspense of having this event go on. As they say, "The show must go on"… and go on it did. Promoter Lou Neglia pulled everything together and the fans in attendance were treated to a superb MMA event. The event was held under the auspices of the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, Larry Hazzard, Commissioner, and sanctioned by USKBA ACTION SPORTS.
